* Zebra mussels are one of the most devastating invasive species in North America, and have recently become a frequent hitchhiker on Marimo moss balls.
Because these mussels can be so small, it's easy for them to go undetected and end up in our water systems. Once they become established in an environment, they alter food webs and change water chemistry, harming native fish, plants, and other aquatic life. They clog pipelines used for water filtration, render beaches unusable, and damage boats. These filter feeders outcompete other native species in infested rivers and lakes, and the waste they produce accumulates and degrades the environment.
Happily, we've found a supplier who grows moss balls from scratch in a sterile environment, guaranteeing mussel-free moss! Plus, to be on the extra safe side, we boil our balls on arrival to be 110% sure they're safe.
